The Net...work
After six years at my current place, I'm looking at moving out.
I thought I was #adulting when I bought this place. Look at me, I have a mortgage! Surely I'm an adult now? Well, try selling a place.
Anyway, even though I don't know where I'm moving to, of course I've started the real priority of thinking about what my future home's network is going to look like.
Like any hobby I have, I tend to go deep on this stuff pretty fast. Now it's all, “Oh you don't want to go with CCA for your drops, you want solid bare copper, and UTP, not shielded. And Cat 6A of course to minimize the alien crosstalk at 500 MHz if you're looking to go 10GBASE-T. For the 12+ runs, I'd recommend coming out of the wall through a brush panel, and for that number, sure, keystone jacks into a blank patch panel are probably the way to go.“
Oh my God, Muki, you fucking nerd.
If you know me, I don't exactly get outwardly excited about much. I like to think I'm just a pretty chill guy. In fact, sometimes when I catch myself getting more animated than usual, I often feel overwhelmingly self-conscious and check myself before I wreck myself.
It wasn't until I really had to explain it to my wife that I realised it for myself; my deep dives are how I get excited. I learn every little tiny detail there is to know about something I'm excited about. I've watched several hours of network cable installers on YouTube wiring up offices now, and enjoyed it.
So yeah. Of course I've gone and done the research on cable types, have developed an opinion on wiring termination options, and have spent (not wasted) hours splitting hairs on what would be parts that are only a few dollars.
Apart from just being a geek, that's how I get excited about a lot of things. When my wife and I went to Japan earlier in the year, I spent several hours “walking” from train stations to our hotels on Google Maps Street View. And then walking the surrounding area. You know how people like to joke they know Los Angeles because they've played so much Grand Theft Auto V? Yeah, that's me but anywhere with Street View (Side note: I've also forgotten I've Street View'd a place and then gone there in real life and had that weird “Have I been here before?” vibe).
So yeah. I don't think that really saves me from the bigger, lamer picture of being a guy who gets excited about a home network of all things, but one victory at a time.
And by the way, I did get some Japanese study in today. I guess the excitement is not fully dead there yet.
